Freightliner is founded in 1942 by Leland James, who has been working as a president of Consolidated Freightways, a trucking company headquartered in Portland, Oregon. His idea was not accepted by the truck manufacturer, which was a reason for him to hire a team of engineers and to release his idea.

The first vehicles that Leland James build himself were characterized by an unique cab-over-engine design, durable construction, light weight and easy-to-handle features, which was the key for the great success that came shortly afterwards. After the huge success of the first trucks for sale, Leland James established a Frightways truck manufacturing company in Salt Lake City, UT.

In 1942 the name of the company was changed into Freightliner Corporation. Shortly after the establishment of the company and the manufacture of the early models of Freightliner trucks for sale, the company became a leader in the heavy-duty vehicles industry in North America.

During the World War two the company faced a stagnation which was a result of the shortages of aluminum and manpower. After 1947 things began to change in a good direction. The company continued to manufacture tucks continuously increasing the number of Freightliner trucks for sale, which resulted in significant growth of the business. The business that started with 116 trucks in the 50’s achieved great success in manufacturing over 6,000 vehicles in the 70’s.

The vehicle production was doubled in the 80’s, after the company was bought by one of the greatest automotive companies at that time Daimler-Benz AG. During the 90’s the company continued to expand by purchasing the chassis division of the Oshkosh Corporation. It was then when the company turned into Freightliner Chassis Corporation. The growth of the company didn’t stop here. In the 2000’s the Freightliner truck manufacturer continued with the innovations.

In 2008, the name of the Freightliner company is completely replaced with the name: Daimler Trucks North America LLC. The company with new name continues to work under the same principles and core values of Freightliner: innovation, quality and dedication to the customer’s specific needs.
